There is a growing concern for the safety of people in their work environment and the related hazards that may be found there. Our specialized Occupational Health and Safety training courses offer solid training in the required practices of this field, in addition to various components that give learners skills to oversee workplace safety programs and offer solutions.
Health and Safety (42 hours)
This course introduces the broad and ever-changing field of occupational health and safety, an inherently technical subject area. The multiple dimensions of the various issues - technical, political and personal - are a required part of the training for a professional in this field or a related field. Major topic areas include the Workplace Hazardous Materials Information System (WHMIS), transportation of dangerous goods, accident prevention and investigation, physical and biological agents, and the management of Occupational Health and Safety programs.

- Ergonomics (42 hours)
This course offers an overview of ergonomic principles highlighting basic workplace investigation and familiarization with basic principles relating to anatomy, biomechanics, physiology, manual material handling, cumulative trauma disorders and office ergonomics.
Learning outcomes:
- Apply basic principles of anatomy, physiology, biomechanics and information processing in the design of workplaces
- Analyze jobs from an ergonomics perspective
- Identify environmental hazards
- Design workplaces and office environments using ergonomics principles
- Fire Protection (45 hours)
The risk of fire is a threat to health, safety and the delivery of services. This course outlines specific information related to fire and life safety, and covers topics including chemistry and physics of fire, building design for life safety, and other aspects of fire and life safety. Applicable legal frameworks related to fire and life safety are also covered.
Learning outcomes:
- Understand the legal standards relating to fire protection and life safety
- Ability to recognize, evaluate and identify steps required to control hazardous situations
- Acquire knowledge of fire detection and suppression equipment, and their uses
- Knowledge of considerations for fire and life safety in building design, construction, retrofit and demolition
- An understanding of the role of the fire service, from prevention, through suppression to fire investigation
Our Medical Office training courses prepare learners for a rewarding career focusing on support for the administration of offices in the medical and dental fields. The specialized coursework will help learners develop strong office support skills with an emphasis on interpersonal, organizational and technological and communication skills. These courses teach standard operational procedures that are required for the successful operation of a medical office.
- Medical Office Management – Health (42 hours)
This course provides insight into the medical office professional’s clinical and administrative responsibilities. Basic anatomy and physiology are covered, and available community resources are also highlighted.
Learning outcomes:
- Explain the terminologies associated with diseases
- Describe, spell correctly and pronounce common disease names and the body part or system it affects
- List the symptoms associated with particular common diseases and their current method of treatment
- List the medical tests used to confirm the diagnosis of specific, common diseases
- Explain the function of each body system
- List the names of all of the organs found in specific systems
- List the Latin terms given to specific body systems, if any
- Medical Office Terminology (42 hours)
In this course, learner will study medical terminology that relates to the structure and function of organ systems, disease processes, clinical manifestations, diagnostic procedures and medical-surgical treatments.
Learning outcomes:
- Demonstrate entry-level proficiency in using the language of medicine to build and define common medical terms related to the various systems, structures and cavities of the human body
- Competency in correctly spelling and accurately pronouncing common medical terms related to the various systems, structures, cavities and anatomical planes/regions
- Analyze common procedural and surgical terms used in medicine not built from word parts
- Build, analyze, define, pronounce and spell anatomic, diagnostic, surgical, medical and procedural terms related to all of the systems of the human body
- Medical Office Clerical Procedures (42 hours)
In this course, learners will discover techniques relating to client/patient reception, booking of appointments and procedures, diagnostic and laboratory tests, effective communication with clients/patients, medical ethics and the law, management of medical records, charting, telephone procedures, and computer systems in the medical office, financial billing and accounts.
Learning outcomes:
- Book patient appointments and schedule medical tests
- Maintain and organize patient records
- Provide instructions to patients regarding requirements for common laboratory testing and explain how and why the tests are carried out
- Maintain a Health Information Management System, operate Clinical Management System (CMS) software and paper-based records
- Demonstrate excellent interpersonal skills and function well in a team environment
- Professionalism in the Medical Office (42 hours)
This course examines the role of a medical office professional and the roles of the various professionals who make up the medical office team. Successful communication techniques, human relation skills, client service, workplace safety, ethical/legal responsibilities, the variety of medical settings, and other aspects of professionalism in the medical office are the focus of this course
Learning outcomes:
- Demonstrate personal and professional attitudes and behaviours appropriate for health care providers
- Communicate effectively as a team member within a diverse multicultural and generational religious health care environment
- Demonstrate the preparation of each type of client for a physical exam and perform the required set-up of the examining room
- Categorize and discuss the acute and chronic medical conditions commonly seen in a medical practice
- Identify and discuss the wide range of specialty medical practices
- Compile a list of community resources and associations which are available to clients with various medical conditions and explain how to access them
- Medical Billing (42 hours)
This course is designed to provide learners with the basic principles of efficient health claim billing. Computerized billing software and processes are also introduced.
Learning outcomes:
- Knowledge of the basic principles of health claim billing as outlined by the Ministry of Health, including:
- applying rules and guidelines of medical billing
- understanding how to use the MOH schedule of benefits
- The completion of pre-coded health claim cards and the reconciliation of MOH statements, including:
- interpretation of diagnostic and fee codes
- applying theory in practice, manually and by computer
- Business Writing Fundamentals (42 hours)
This course highlights unique vocational requirements of the medical office profession through instruction in composition, grammar, spelling and punctuation. Leaners will complete a number of writing activities and a series of grammar tests and dictation tests to demonstrate acquired knowledge.
Learning outcomes:
- Apply the principles of written and oral communication
- Integrate fundamental English language usage with program- and career-related
communication
- Computer Application Fundamentals (42 hours)
This introductory, hands-on computer applications course provides learners with a foundation of computer skills in Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint for use in the workplace.
Learning outcomes:
- Acquire general skills in word processing, spreadsheets, presentation, file management,
sending and receiving email - Gain an understanding of how to use a web browser to search for information on the
internet
- Computer Keyboarding Skills (42 hours)
In this course, learners examine keyboarding techniques using various methods that emphasize speed and accuracy. Proofreading and editing documents is covered as well as research about repetitive stress injury and proper ergonomics.
Learning outcomes:
- An understanding of computer and keyboard terms and the anatomy of the keyboard, computer operating system, mouse handling, and file management
- Knowledge and appropriate use of the correct keying techniques (posture and fingering)
- Ability to key previously unseen passages accurately, with an error rate in accordance with the chart provided
- Familiarity with document formatting and the use of Word Processor, including the use of fonts, font formatting, line spacing and paragraph alignment
Our Leadership training courses are designed to provide learners an understanding of leadership styles and an opportunity to develop a personal leadership style. In today's changing economic climate, the role of a manager/supervisor is extremely demanding and complex. In addition to managing the many practical aspects of a business operation, a good leader must be motivating, empowering, and supportive of staff. Problem-solving and team building skills are essential.
- Fundamentals of Leadership (24 hours)
In this course, learners will gain an understanding of various management and leadership styles while learning problem-solving skills for effective leadership.

- Determine personal leadership talents and capabilities as well as areas for improvement
- Analyze and formulate ways to increase leadership capacity
- Identify and develop priorities and action plans to enhance leadership capacity
- Developing Leadership Capacity (45 hours)
This course focuses on supporting learners through a process of discovery and inquiry that prepares them to maximize their learning effectiveness and to increase their own leadership capacity. In order to maximally benefit from this course, students need to have experience working in an organization because many of the course assignments, assessments and activities require this context.

Our Information Technology (IT) training courses help learners develop specialized computer skills. - Network Security (56 hours)
Connecting a computer to a network creates a situation where information that is stored or communicated may be accessed by an unintended audience. In this course, learners will identify risks to privacy and implement a variety of solutions to protect data transmission and communications software.

- Introduction to Hospitality and Tourism (42 hours)
In this course, learners will study the size and scope of the hospitality and tourism Industry. Coursework focuses on businesses and organizations that provide services at a national and international level.

- Understanding of the major demand generators in the tourism and hospitality industry
- Demonstrate the role service operations plays in the tourism and hospitality Industry
- Concepts of Customer Service (42 hours)
In this course, learners wills examine what makes customer service exceptional and how that service is to be delivered in an integrated hospitality service environment. The course will emphasize value-added customer service strategies to gain a competitive edge, such as use employee empowerment training. Tactics for delivering superior guest service, including service facility location and capacity planning, the use of technology, understanding theories of consumer behaviour and quality assurance methods for assessing the effectiveness of a hospitality environment will also be explored.

The role and responsibilities of the rooms division in a hotel are studied in this course from a management perspective. Learners will focus on issues and concerns in the departments of the Front Office, Reservations and Guest Services. The emphasis is on the practical aspects of accommodations management.

- Basic Culinary Techniques (60 hours)

- Demonstrate basic hot food techniques and specifications, and source ingredients to prepare and present

- Dining Room Service (28 hours)
This course will provide learners with an opportunity to become proficient with respect to professional dining room service techniques. The in-class component will include live demonstrations, scenario analysis and practical hands-on exercises. In particular, learners will be introduced to the essential elements of professional dining room service behaviour and team dynamics.
